Village Clean Up

A youth led initiative in Ōtara. The Pasifika Leadership Group takes a village approach to a community challenge.

Our Pasifika Leadership group, led by a group of 10 young people, came up with a clean up project called the "Village Clean Up". They saw a lot of rubbish accumulating at our Local Town Centres Otara & Mangere and wanted to help keep their communities clean by picking up rubbish over a term.

5 Key Outcomes for those invovled:

  1. Our young people are more aware of the needs in their
communities and have the confidence to make changes.

    2. They felt encouraged to tell others how important it is to clean
up after themselves and take pride in our communities.

    3. They learnt about how our waste can affect the Pacific Ocean
and essentially end up hurting the environments their own
    families live in.

    4. Our young people were able to sort through rubbish and learn
about the correct ways of recycling and waste management.

    4. They learnt the impacts of waste and how to be energy-saving
    and water saving.
